Why?

Today I attended a Regional conference.  The topic came up about the media reports and public sharing of  MISinformation about Mormons,  and why Mormons don't lash out or go on the defense.  So I ask you this question:

In your own personal opinion, Why don't Mormons speak up and try to change peoples perception about them when misinformation is being spread?

  2. I think it's because it is against the spirit of our religion in general. We are taught to follow in the Savior's footsteps, who was tolerant and forgiving. We are taught instead of being on the defensive to "offensively" reach out with love to those who misunderstand us so that they will want to truly understand us. Besides, if they have their minds made up already, nothing we say will change anything.

  3. i agree mostly with you, michelle. we are a people that tend to do things quietly and just let our actions do the talking. there is a difference between being on the defensive and just correcting something false that is said about us. it is a gray area sometimes. we do have to pick our battles. if someone is just picking a fight, yes, it's just best to walk away.
it is my experience that people do speak up, though. we do defend our beliefs and do correct false perceptions. i think there is more of a public - media misinformation thing going on that the church itself doesn't address because we as a church do not play media games. maybe i just associate with brazen people, but i know that most of my friends and acquaintances are speaking on the behalf of our beliefs. like michelle said, as well. it is a slow process. line upon line as it were.we con't correct the whole misunderstanding at one sitting.
